The problems lie partly in the UI toolkits. I find GNOME to be ugly as hell. I find KDE to be quite attractive, actually. Not as smooth as Windows, may be different Toolkits, but they look very similar and Linux programmers don´t have to change the look and feel of a program in order to sell a new version!
